Even if you are living in a foreign country for work, studies, or business, you do not lose your right to vote in your home state of Arunachal Pradesh! The Election Commission of India calls you an Overseas Elector (NRI).

If you hold a valid Indian Passport, you can easily register your name in the voter list back home. To do this, you must exclusively use Form 6A. Let's know how to apply for it online.

Who Can Apply as an NRI Voter?

  • You must be a citizen of India (holding an Indian Passport).
  • You must be 18 years or older on the 1st of January of the current year.
  • You must NOT have acquired citizenship of any other country (if you took a foreign passport, you cannot vote).

Step-by-Step Guide for NRI Registration

Before you start, you must keep a scanned PDF copy of your Indian Passport ready. Follow the below steps carefully to register from abroad:

Step 1. Visit the ECI Portal: First, open your computer and go to the official Indian voters portal: https://voters.eci.gov.in/.

Step 2. Login or Sign Up: You must create a new account using your email ID or mobile number. Login to the system securely.

Step 3. Select Form 6A: On the main screen, look for Form 6A (Application for Inclusion of Name by Overseas Elector). Click on it. Do not select the normal Form 6.

Step 4. Fill Passport Details: The form will ask for your Passport Number, Visa details, and the foreign address where you currently live. Type all details exactly as printed on your passport.

Step 5. Indian Address: The form will also ask for your home address in Arunachal Pradesh. This MUST be the exact address printed on the last page of your Indian Passport.

Step 6. Upload Passport Scan: You must upload a scanned copy of your valid Indian Passport (front page, back page, and visa page). Then click Submit and save your Reference ID!

Important Note on Voting

Currently, the Election Commission does not allow e-voting or postal ballots for NRIs. While your name will be registered in your home village in Arunachal Pradesh, you must be physically present at your polling booth in India on the day of the election to cast your vote. You must show your original Indian Passport at the booth as ID proof.
